Quick Synopsis:

Osuke Kuroe is not having the best day after getting kicked out of an apartment on the same day he moves in. Bemoaning his luck on a park bench, he’s then approached by a strange man who claims to work in real estate who offers him a gorgeous place to live within his price range! There’s just one catch: he’ll be living with Nijio Yuki, an intimidating blond with piercings and tattoos, as a roommate. Sure, the other man’s a little grumpy and standoffish, but it seems simple enough otherwise, right? That is, until he experiences something strange at night…and discovers he’s got an unusual affinity for spirits!

Nico’s Review

An overall charming introductory volume. Osuke is endearing as a main character, and it’s clear that he’s been more than a little sheltered all his life. He’s trying his best though!

I love the premise of rehoming supernatural entities, so I almost wish that they could have delved a little more into the theme of humanity encroaching upon vs coexisting with nature/the supernatural that’s briefly touched upon throughout the volume. Maybe it’ll be explored further down the line? The supernatural entities they encounter aren’t always ones who can be reasoned with, either, which makes for some excellent tension in one particular chapter.

Nijio is very prickly at the moment, but based on what’s hinted at about how things went downhill with prior partners, it’s pretty understandable why he has such high defenses and seems insistent on keeping things professional between himself and Osuke. That being said, holding hands with Osuke seems to enhance his abilities! There’s quite a lot of skinship to be had (and even a kiss! sort of!) out of professional necessity. But it’s clear that they’re still getting to know each other at this point.

I would have to say that my favorite chapter in this volume is when they’re tasked with coaxing a zashiki-warashi out of hiding, which felt like a turning point in their relationship wherein Nijio begins to open up justa bit under the power of Osuke’s clumsy but endearing determination .

The English translation by Leo McDonagh flows smoothly and includes a very thorough translation notes section to explain all the cultural notes! Very important for those new to the world of yokai!
